2D Investigating How Polar Animals Keep Warm

March 09, 2020

In our Polar Regions topic we have read that the animals that live there can survive the freezing temperatures because they have a layer of fat called blubber under their skin.

Today we investigated how the fat can keep you warm in icy cold water. We put a layer of fat around one hand and left the other hand bare and plunged them into icy water. The bare hand quickly got so cold we had to take it out, but we couldn’t feel the cold through the fat on the other hand.

No wonder penguins, seals and polar bears don’t mind swimming in the freezing Polar seas!
